Foundation (Basic) Bobath-NDT Paediatric Course
The course comprises a combination of lectures, demonstrations, group work, practical classes and clinical practice. The content is presented in a modular format.
Length of course: 8-Weeks (minimum 240 Hours), usually presented in modules of 2 or 3 weeks at a time.
Course Participant’s Criteria:
The course is open to Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and Speech & Language Therapists with at least two years full-time/equivalent postgraduate experience in the treatment of children with Cerebral Palsy (CP) and doctors involved in the treatment of children with cerebral palsy.
To maintain high standards of training it is essential for therapists to be working with children before and immediately after the course.
The course is designed to:
- Give an overview of the current theoretical background to the Bobath approach to the treatment of the child with cerebral palsy, through the study of neurosciences, syndrome classification, principles of assessment and treatment.
- Provide initial practical and clinical experience in the handling, assessment and management of children with cerebral palsy.
- Develop awareness of factors involved in problem solving and communication in all aspects of the treatment context, including the child, the parents, therapists, and the health and education teams.
The curriculum includes a comprehensive study of typical child development, the different types of cerebral palsy and their impact on development, and analysis of movement – both theoretical and practical. Other aspects covered include current views of neuroanatomy, neurophysiology and knowledge of neuropathology and how this relates this to children with cerebral palsy (C.P).
During the course participants will be assessed on their written work, practical work and verbal presentations.
